In part one of this blog, we talked about thinking like a trainer—focusing on your learners, simplifying your language, and creating opportunities for interaction. You’re off to a great start! But there’s still more you can do to make your sessions both engaging and effective.
Here are five more tips to help you grow your confidence and make your expertise shine in the classroom.
Focus on Practice
Adults learn best by doing. Give your learners time to apply what you’re teaching, whether it’s through practice exercises, case studies, or role-play. Practice helps reinforce what they’ve learned and gives them the confidence to put the skills into action at work.
Embrace Feedback
No one gets training perfect the first time, and that’s okay! Ask your learners for feedback after each session. What helped them the most? What could be clearer next time? Each piece of feedback is a stepping stone toward becoming a more confident trainer.
Don’t Try to Be Perfect
It’s easy to feel pressure to know every answer or deliver flawlessly, but learners respond best to authenticity. If you make a mistake or need to double-check something, it’s completely fine. Your enthusiasm, honesty, and openness to learn will do more to build trust than perfection ever could.
Partner with a Learning Professional
If you have access to instructional designers or experienced trainers, tap into their expertise. They can help you structure your sessions, create interactive exercises, and ensure your training aligns with organizational goals. Collaboration can turn your content into a truly learner-centered experience.
Keep Learning
Training is its own discipline, and the best trainers never stop growing. Explore workshops, books, or webinars about adult learning principles and facilitation techniques. The more you understand how people learn, the more effective and enjoyable your training will become.
Becoming a great trainer doesn’t mean changing who you are. It means learning how to share what you know in a way that inspires others to grow.
