6 Essentials to Look for in a Train-the-Trainer Workshop or Seminar

Are you looking for a train the trainer workshop instead of this article?

Skills training is a rapidly evolving field. In this highly competitive marketplace, training for trainers is more important than ever before.

A train-the-trainer workshop is the fastest and most efficient way to build the skills you need to successfully train today’s employees. But with so many workshops, seminars, and other training options available, it’s hard to know where to begin.

With so many train-the-trainer workshops and certification programs to choose from, how can you find the perfect training program for you?

Here are the important questions you need to ask before choosing a train-the-trainer workshop or seminar.

Does this train-the-trainer workshop include hands-on learning and feedback?

People learn better by doing.

That’s why the best training programs include opportunities for learners to practice the techniques taught in the classroom.

The learning experience is complete only when you practice or apply what you’ve learned and benefit from instructor feedback.

Unfortunately, too many programs don’t offer opportunities to practice new skills and get feedback, which is a key part of the learning process.

When adult learners have the chance to learn from doing, and get constructive feedback on what they’ve done, they develop a deeper understanding of what they’ve learned. That’s the first step in applying those techniques in the real world.

A good quality train-the-trainer workshop will teach you how to give your learners the opportunity to practice new techniques and skills in the classroom.

In addition, it will teach you how to give constructive feedback on their efforts so they can learn more effectively.

Do I need an in-person or online train-the-trainer workshop?

Depending on where you’re located, an in-person workshop may not be available. However, online training programs can be just as effective as in-person programs.

There are no geographical limits to online programs, which means the training talent can be located anywhere in the world. That opens much broader opportunities to get the best possible instructors.

Plus, because there’s no travel or commute required, online programs save you time and money. You can also make just as many new connections and business relationships compared to an in-person event.

When selecting an online training program, be sure to look for one that is an actual workshop with practice, feedback, and live interaction, not just a webinar.

Most webinars tend to be one-way communication, with little or no feedback from the instructor. While webinars can be a great way to learn new information, they aren’t the best way to get trained in new skills.

Does this train-the-trainer workshop provide a personalized action plan?

Learning new skills is essential, but it’s even more important to know how you will put those skills to use on an ongoing basis.

To get the full benefit of the program, you need to know you will have a personalized action plan in place when you finish.

The exact format of an action plan varies from one program to the next, but the purpose is the same.

It lays out the essential steps you will need to take to put your training to use once you get back on the job. It can also cover the obstacles you might encounter back on the job and how to address them.

It may include additional tools and shortcuts you can use during and after the training. But at its core, it should include a detailed checklist of action items you can follow.

That way, you can immediately apply the skills you’ve learned in your training program and hit the ground running.

Is this train-the-trainer program recognized within the industry?

One way to find a train-the-trainer program is to check with your colleagues, HR department, and your broader professional network to see if anyone can recommend a program.

While personal recommendations and reviews are a good place to start, it’s most important to make sure the program has a trustworthy reputation.

Look for a program that is recognized within the industry. One that’s designed based on the competencies set by the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance and Instruction (IBSTPI). This not-for-profit corporation develops international standards for training.

Programs, such as ours, that follow IBSTPI recommendations, hold themselves to the highest standards, making them a good choice.

What kind of follow-up support is included in this training for trainers?

Too often, professional certified training and train-the-trainer workshops focus more on inspiring and energizing participants than on long-term learning.

Once participants finish the program and get back to work, they may not have enough confidence or experience to put their newfound skills to use.

That’s where additional support is invaluable. Look for a program that is available to answer any questions you may have after the training is complete.

If you aren’t entirely clear about something you learned, it’s immensely helpful to be able to reach out to the instructor.

Some programs even encourage you to send in a learning module you have designed, or a recording of a training session you’ve delivered, in order to get feedback on your work.

That’s valuable.

Learning is a lifelong pursuit. With the right kind of follow-up assistance, you will be able to continue to learn and improve long after the training program is finished.

What alumni resources does this training for trainers offer?

After completing train-the-trainer seminars, people often find they gain more than just new skills.

They also create lasting connections with other participants in their industry, making new friends and expanding their business network.

To help keep those long-term connections, a quality training program will provide a dedicated webpage or social media group where alumni can meet, exchange ideas, and network.

In addition to the benefits of reconnecting, these alumni resources may include bonus tips, techniques, and best practices you can use to continue honing your skills.

How to Find the Right Train-the-Trainer Workshop or Seminar

To make sure you will learn the skills you really need from a train-the-trainer workshop or seminar, look for a program that meets all these criteria:

  • Gives you an opportunity to practice the skills you learned and get immediate feedback from the instructor.
  • Provides opportunities to interact with the instructor. (A live or online train-the-trainer workshop, not just a webinar or presentation.)
  • Includes a personalized action plan so you will know how to immediately apply the skills you learned once the training is done.
  • Has a trustworthy reputation, is industry-recognized, and follows international standards.
  • Includes follow-up support to answer any questions you may have in the future.
  • Offers alumni resources to help you expand your business network and build your career.

When you find a program that delivers on all these essentials and teaches the skills you need to design or deliver courses, workshops, and seminars, then it’s the right train-the-trainer workshop for you.
