Being a Learning and Development (L&D) manager is more than simply organizing training sessions or checking off compliance boxes; it’s about shaping how people grow, connect, and perform at work. But how do you know if you’re good at it? It’s not always obvious. You might be too close to the work to notice, or maybe you’re comparing yourself to others who seem to have it all figured out.

Here are some real-world signs you’re doing great (even if you don’t always feel like it).

Your Team Sees Learning as a Normal Part of Work

If employees come to you before there’s a problem, you’re doing something right. A good L&D manager builds a culture where development isn’t seen as a chore or an afterthought—it’s just what people do. When learning is embedded in everyday work conversations, people start to take ownership of their growth. That’s a huge win and a clear sign that your efforts are paying off.

You Focus on Business Impact, Not Just Attendance

Good L&D managers know that learning isn’t just about filling seats in a classroom or hitting high attendee numbers for your e-learning modules. You look at outcomes. Are people applying what they’ve learned? Has performance improved? Are teams communicating better? You can link your programs back to tangible business goals like higher productivity, stronger leadership pipelines, or better customer satisfaction.

If you find yourself talking about metrics like ROI, engagement scores, or performance shifts (and not just participation rates), you’re thinking like a strategic partner.

You Listen More Than You Talk

The best L&D managers are great listeners. You take time to understand what employees actually need, not just what leadership thinks they need. You ask the right questions, run proper needs analyses, and design solutions that solve real problems. When you listen, people feel heard, and that creates trust.

If your colleagues regularly come to you for advice on handling tricky team issues or career growth, you’ve become more than a trainer—you’re a trusted coach.

You Keep Things Human

You know that learning can be intimidating, especially when it involves change. Good L&D managers balance strategy with empathy. You make training engaging, relevant, and accessible. You encourage vulnerability and curiosity. You’re the person who reminds everyone that it’s okay to make mistakes while learning something new.

If your sessions are filled with laughter, open conversation, and a few “aha” moments, that’s the magic mix.

You Never Stop Learning

What might be the biggest sign you’re good at your job? You practice what you preach. You’re curious about new trends, tools, and techniques. You read, attend webinars, test new learning platforms, or experiment with AI-driven content. You see your own development as just as important as everyone else’s.

When your growth mindset inspires others to keep evolving, you’re leading by example. That’s what sets a great L&D manager apart from the others.

You don’t need to have all the answers or run the flashiest programs to be good at this work. If you care about people’s growth, align learning with purpose, and stay curious, you’re already ahead of the game. A great L&D manager build skills, as well as confidence, culture, and connection.

If you see these signs in yourself and are ready to develop a highly effective training team, look no further than this workshop: The Successful Training Manager.

Budget, strategy, and coaching your trainers: covered in the training manager’s guide.
