If you’re an instructional designer, you already know the power of a well-crafted case study. It transforms abstract concepts into real-world applications, helping learners practice skills in realistic situations. But let’s be honest, building those case studies from scratch can take time.
That’s where AI comes in.
Whether you’re designing classroom or virtual training, AI can help create dynamic, relevant case studies faster, without sacrificing quality or creativity. Here’s how to make AI your secret weapon in learning design.
Start with the Goal
Before you fire up your preferred AI tool, know your learning objective. What should learners be able to do? A strong case study starts with a focused ask:
“Create a scenario where a new manager must give feedback to a team member who missed a deadline.”
Set the Scene
Make AI’s output more relevant by providing context: industry, job roles, common challenges, and tone. The more specific you are, the more realistic the case study will feel.
Add Characters
People make scenarios memorable. Ask AI to generate short profiles for key players: backgrounds, goals, and communication styles. A little detail goes a long way in creating relatable situations.
Include Decisions and Consequences
Strong case studies don’t just describe a problem—they give learners choices. Use AI to create branching scenarios that drive critical thinking:
“Offer three possible manager responses and describe the likely outcome of each.”
Create Variations
Once you’ve built a solid base scenario, have AI tweak it. Change perspectives, adjust stakes, or increase complexity for more advanced learners.
Wrap it Up with Reflection
AI can even suggest discussion questions or debrief prompts to deepen learning. A well-placed reflection can turn a simple scenario into a powerful learning moment.
Put AI to the Test
AI won’t replace human expertise, but it can amplify it. Try crafting a case study with AI and see how it can streamline your process while keeping learning impactful.
