Instructional Design for the Virtual Trainer
Gain the skills and confidence you need to successfully design virtual classroom training that is engaging and maximizes performance. Learn how to determine…
Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have not replaced the need for instructional designers. The quality of the output generated by AI is wholly dependent on the prompt(s) written by the designer, and their ability to analyze the output using their own knowledge and expertise.
This interactive workshop will show instructional design professionals how to use AI to strategically enhance critical tasks within the instructional design process. Learn the 6-phase approach to writing a generative AI prompt, then apply it to each of those critical design tasks to generate output that meets the goals of the project. Several practice exercises will allow you to apply different prompt engineering techniques, then analyze the output using critical thinking skills. You’ll see demonstrations using some of the leading free large language AI models and have an opportunity to use them yourself.
NOTE: This workshop will not look at AI tools used to generate audio, video, etc.

IMPORTANT: All participants MUST be able to access at least one free or paid large language model (LLM) AI tool. Use of an AI tool is essential for practice opportunities built into the online sessions, and for your intersession assignments. If you aren’t currently using an AI tool, you may set up a free account for any of these commonly used tools that are currently available in North America: ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini, or Microsoft CoPilot. Please speak with your IT department, as required, prior to registering for this workshop to ensure you have the appropriate permissions to use one of these tools. You will not be required to use any of your organization’s proprietary information for the practice exercises; all content and examples will be provided to you.
This workshop combines 3 synchronous sessions with additional self-paced activities. You will spend time live, online learning how to write generative AI prompts that will strategically enhance your instructional design projects. Also, 2 to 3 hours will be required for pre-course work and intersession assignments.
