The current need to deliver engaging, effective, and efficient content through live online training has everyone looking for the best software, tools, and methods. I often survey our participants and find they do have access to virtual classroom platforms with all the bells and whistles, but they are still spending most of their time lecturing their learners online.
Breakouts are one of the most versatile and powerful virtual classroom tools! They are available on almost all the platforms we’re currently using. With some advanced preparation, breakouts can be used for practice exercises, discussions, case studies, and role plays! Each method can elevate your learner’s experience, retention, and engagement!
Here are some tips for incorporating breakouts into your next training session. These tips will set you and your learners up for success!
Create a Collaborative Learning Environment
Breakouts allow learners to share their expertise and experiences with others, something adult learners expect. Ideally, small groups of 4-6 participants will maximize their learning opportunities and participation. Breakouts are also an excellent venue for facilitating feedback.
Outline Expectations for the Breakout
Ensure you have given clear instructions outlining the specific goal or task to be completed during the breakout. Learners should have access to the instructions either in the breakout itself or through a course manual. They can even take a snapshot of the instructional slide if needed, although most platforms allow for sharing this type of slide in the breakouts themselves.
Maximize Time
Give timing reminders and check on the groups by popping into each breakout to ensure they are on track and don’t have any questions. Assign roles ahead of time and rotate roles throughout the different breakouts. Pop in and out of the breakouts to observe if they are close to meeting their goals and adjust the timing if needed.
Cover More Content
Leverage breakouts to cover more content by assigning different chunks of content to various groups. Once everyone returns from the breakouts, be sure to debrief their work! You can have each group share their results or conclusions, have each group share a section of their results, or have them share what went well or the barriers they encountered.
If you’re conducting performance-based training where learners can practice and receive feedback on their new skills, breakouts are a valuable tool! Breakouts are one of the most effective and efficient ways to maximize engagement in the virtual classroom.
Consider adding a well-designed breakout to your next virtual course. You will be thrilled with the benefits!
