For the learner, attending virtual classroom training can be mentally draining. Even more so when the training is mandated, and they feel they’re just another name to check off on an attendance list. If you’ve ever attended a course or seminar with a facilitator who seemed disconnected, you know what I’m talking about. Who wants to spend their precious time with someone who puts zero effort into building rapport and connecting with their attendees?
To avoid your audience dreading your courses and, instead, have them wanting to come back for more, here are some of my tips to let your attendees know you genuinely care about them and their learning, and are excited to have them join you.
Start With a Smile
A smile goes a long way. When you’re chatting with someone face-to-face, a smile shows a happy first impression and the intention to make a connection. This is also true in a virtual environment. When you’re in the virtual classroom, talk with a smile as if you were with the learners in person. Even though they can’t see you, they can hear your smile in your voice and feel your positive energy. Be sure to continue smiling throughout your time together.
Address Learners by Name
Nothing feels more personal than being addressed by name. So, be sure to use each learner’s name to help build rapport. This gesture shows you’ve taken the time to learn everyone’s name, and ensures your attendees feel welcomed and acknowledged. Start this practice when your attendees are logging into the classroom. Introduce yourself by name, welcome them by name, and follow up with an open-ended question such as, “How are you today?”
Be Attentive
Let your attendees see that you’re interested in what they’re saying and care about the questions they’re asking. Answer their questions as they ask them, add them to a parking lot, or make note of them so you can come back to them later. If you’re doing an icebreaker, take notes to remember certain things your learners point out. Then you can reference them later if the opportunity arises.
Send Learners Off with a Warm Farewell
Just as you would at the start of a session, finish with a positive attitude and a smile that shines through in your voice. Thank your learners for attending and be sure to let them know how to contact you after the course should they have any questions. This is another great tip for showing your learners you care and are glad they attended.
We all want to feel like we’re attending training that is beneficial and taught by someone who is not a robot. Someone who cares and shows emotion. What are your tips for showing your virtual classroom learners that you care?
