Whether you’re designing in-person or virtual classroom training, one of the most important considerations is time. It can be a huge challenge to incorporate all the course content while building in the three phases of instruction—presentation, application, and feedback. Enter the flipped classroom!
Quite simply, in the flipped classroom the presentation happens outside of classroom time, and the support activities occur in class with the instructor present. There is a wide range of presentation methods that can be used to keep participants engaged: self-paced e-learning modules, short videos, infographics, and interactive reading activities, to name a few.
Here are three benefits of the flipped classroom:
1. Encourages active learning – The onus is on the learners to teach themselves what they need to know.
2. Allows participants to learn at their own pace – Learners can take the time they need to process the content which, in turn, allows them more time to focus on the information they don’t understand or find more detailed.
3. Provides more time for practice and feedback – The instructor can plan for a variety of activities to support the content learned outside the classroom, provide clarification where needed, and focus on feedback. Application and feedback are key to a successful learning experience!
The flipped classroom can be a valuable tool for adult learners if the content isn’t too complex and doesn’t need too much interaction between the instructor and participants.
